Surroundings of La Espenuca

La Espenuca, in the municipality of Coiros, concentrates significant traces of popular culture in a small area, materialized in a Romanic chapel, a viewpoint and an ancient belfry.

History: On this hill traces of the Castro culture have been found, such as tegula tiles, stone grinders and headstones decorated with geometric motifs. According to the chronicles, there was a monastery with a chapel here, which was destroyed by the Swabians when they invaded Galicia in the beginning of V century. It was subsequently rebuilt once again in 881 and incorporated to the monastery of Cis in the XI century.

Description: The viewpoint is located in the surroundings of a forest situated 290 meters above sea level. The cutting off of some eucalyptus trees is included in the project , since they hide the view. Besides, on the hill there is a column with a cross on top and also a belfry, both of them independent from the structure of la Espenuca church, called Santa Eulalia, due to acoustic reasons. In the surrounding area, there is a small Romanic chapel of XII century that suffered several circumstances, as it was destroyed by the Swabians and subsequently erected again.
