Also known as pazo (kind of manor house) of Láncara, the pazo of Mariñán is a country house placed in the fertile marshes of the ria of Betanzos. It has been considered as a historical, artistic and monumental landmark since 1972.
History: The origins of the pazo are located in the middle of the 15th century, in a defense which was built by order of Gómez Pérez das Mariñas, a noble knight from the court of Juan II and who took part actively in the Irmandiñas Wars.
Description: The building floor plan presents an U structure. The staircase, faced to the east, and the chapel, faced to the west, are the main elements that make this construction become a great country house. Its interiors started being restored in 1975 and were mainly equipped with furniture from the XIX century. Their rooms contain one of the best art gallery from Galician artists.
Surroundings: One of the key elements of the pazo are the gardens. They offer the real appearance of the good life thanks to an exceptional natural environment: the landscape of As Mariñas.
Use: Nowadays, it is used for institutional acts, as a centre of courses and as a museum, having a great part of the artistic collection of the Delegation.
Curiosity: In 1997, the jardín de la palabra (garden of words) was created. There, important visitors plant a tree and at its foot they leave a message for the future.
