Church of Santa María del Azogue

This Gothic style church is located in Betanzos and was built in the XIV and XV centuries. The work was developed by Fernán Pérez de Andrade "O Boo" and his successor Fernán Pérez " O Mozo" on the basis of another Romanesque temple. It was declared National Monument in 1944, and is currently considered a Property of Cultural Interest (the Spanish B.I.C.)

Description: It has a basilical floor plan and three naves with four not arched different parts leading to a triple apse. The main nave is wider than the side ones. There are three radiating chapels with groin vault; the Main Chapel has an heptagonal floor plan, and the others have square ones.

Dont miss: Outside, above the door, there are a large rose window and a semi-circular arch that covers the entrance. This arch is ornamented with small arches, and on the archivolts there are vegetal and geometric motifs, and 22 human figures. Two scenes share the tympanum: one about an Epiphany, and the other one about the Anunnciation.
