Church of San Paio

Predominantly baroque church (XVII-XVIII) that is located in the parish of San Paio de Aranga. Its bell tower with three bodies stands out.

Description: This is a very spaciuos temple which has Latin cross plan and three naves. Two arches in each side form the choir with stands; the baptistery is under the arches at the right side; and at both sides there are staircases which lead upstairs. In the main nave there are two radiating chapels internally connected by semi-barrel arches.

What to see: There is a chapel in the North wall, where the Holy Cross (perhaps from the X century) is kept. It is very similar to theCross of the Angels of Oviedo. A trabeated door, six openings, and a vaulted niche with the Saint, who still preserves polychromy remains; can be observed on the main facade. The bell tower with three bodies stands out. The first body is as high as the church; the second one has balustrade and bells; and the third one has octogonal plan, eight openings, and it is crowned by a baroque small dome, which is clearly influenced by the style of Compostela.

Surroundings: The remains of what was once the priests house can be observed next to the church, as well as its pigeon house and a beautiful sundial. You can also visit a lovely calvary sculpture or cuceiro in the graveyard. It has square base and three stairs. The capital is composed by volutes and angels, and the Cross is on it having Christ crucified on the front, and an Immaculate Virgin on the back, with a praying attitude and her intertwined fingers.
