Feria Franca Medieval

Betanzos celebrates its well-known Feria Franca Medieval in the second weekend of July, where the town changes the century and turns into a place of theater, crafts, and traditions.

History: In the Middle Ages, Betanzos celebrated a free fair during the month of November. Here, the traders of the kingdom were allowed to sell in the town without paying sales taxes or tariffs for the foreign goods. Over the centuries, the fair is still celebrated set in the Middle Ages. Date was altered from November to July, and time reduced from one month to the current three days.

Environment: During the days of the festivities, the old town is divided by professions, as it was anciently made. Thus, specialists in crafts, carpentry, herbalist, leather, gold and silver works, and gastronomic places are brought together. Each of them disguise with the cloths that were used for these jobs in the Middle Ages.

Programme: There is a wide program of events, among which we can highlight on Friday, the barrels; on Saturday, the the Moors performance and the the witchs burning; and on Sunday, the leprouses expulsion and the tournament.
