Hill forts and petroglyphs in Aranga

Although this municipalty owns a wide list of archaeologic monuments, vegetation and the execution many works have altered the state of many of them. However, the hill forts or castros of Flores and Painzal, and the petroglyphs of A Fonte stand out.

-Hill fort of Flores (picture): This site, which still preserves parts of the defeces of the hill fort, has been altered by vegetation and buildings. It has a heavy fall to the Mandeo river on the North side, which serves it as a natural defence.

-Hill fort of O Painzal: It is located in San Vicente das Fervenzas and has a pseudo-circular main enclosure of about 80-100 metres in diametre. Although it is covered with vegetation; the parapete has a considerable height both to the interior and to the exterior, taking the advantage of the natural topography of the land in both cases.

-Petroglyphs of A Fonte: These elements have been recorded Property of Cultural Interest (the Spanish B.I.C.) by the Law 16 of the 25th of June, 1985 of Spanish Historical Heritage. It is not an isolated petroglyph but several petroglyphs scattered along the same slope. According to the information from the Heritage office, the motifs, which are placed on the top of the stone, are made up of 10 circles of variable diametre.
